Rollercoaster ride

Probably 10 minutes after Troy sent out a positive email letting people know about the good news with my lymph nodes, the surgeon himself called to say the news was not all good.

My lymph nodes are clear, but the tumor margins are not. This means there were cancer cells in the margins. He said I will need more surgery… either go in and take out more tissue around the edges or a mastectomy. A MASTECTOMY. He said he wants to see us in his office to go over the options. I had an appointment for Tuesday. However, as soon as we hung up the phone, I started to lose it. There was no way I could make it until Tuesday. Troy called back and used his magic to get us an appointment at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

I’m freaking out. What went wrong? Did the surgeon screw up? Why did he say the m-word? That sounds so extreme. I have a lot of breast left, why in the world would I do a mastectomy?
