Russell “Papaw” Kearby, 1921-2006

It’s Troy again. I seem to have take over the blog lately.

Well, good or bad, Papaw didn’t wake up this morning. I assume we’ll all be in Terre Haute for the near future. I can’t yet imagine all the details that need to be worked out, but I’m sure we’ll get through it. Rosie’s feeling better and is up to the travel, which is good.

Russ lived a long life and made hundreds of friends. I remember growing up that it was soooo irritating that everywhere we went, Russ seemed to run into someone he knew. And he would talk, and talk, and talk. I eventually figured out that’s what happens when you’re nice to people. You make friends everywhere. That’s just one of the ways Russ showed me how to live a good life. I thought he was so lame when we met, but now I know that I couldn’t have asked for a better role model. And I’m really glad that I am old enough to appreciate it, and I got the time to thank him for that.

Some of his last words to me were that he was ready to die, but God hadn’t called him yet. Well, I guess he finally called you, Papaw. There are a lot of opinions on what happens to us after we die, but if anyone could deserve an afterlife of joy and peace, he did. My greatest hope is that he enjoys his reward, whatever and wherever that may be. Godspeed, Russell Kearby. Godspeed.
