Music lyrics

Do you ever have a moment where you suddenly “hear” song lyrics for the first time?

I do this a lot. I can have a song memorized before I ever really listen to the lyrics. I do this so much that I am very specific about what music I listen to while my daughter is in the car. I have caught myself singing along to some really raunchy or potty-mouth lyrics before I really realize what the song is all about! So, we listen to pre-recorded children’s music or, unfortunately, Radio Disney.

I have a two-CD collection of music created by my awesome friend LisaP. She put together this set of music she called “Songs to Live By.” The songs were submitted by various breast cancer survivors and fighters. It’s an AWESOME collection and I listen to it at least once a day. Generally, music uplifts me and gets my spirit flowing. I’m a fan of music and I definitely love this collection. It features songs from James Taylor, the Indigo Girls, Bonnie Raitt, Nickelback, Madonna, John Denver, Ricki Martin and Sheryl Crow, just to name a few. It has my pick on it, too – Superman by Five for Fighting.

Today, the lyrics of one of the songs suddenly leapt out to me. It’s a song I’ve been “rocking out” to for a few years. It’s a song where it’s a lot of fun to scream the lyrics – and I love those songs! It’s Evanescence, whose female lead singer has a voice with very eerie and beautiful qualities. I’ve heard this song probably no less than 1,000 times. I know the words. But, today, I “heard” them for the first time and they spoke to a sad little place inside of me.

Breast cancer is hard, folks. I’m missing a boob. My hair is atrocious. I still can’t feel my toes. I don’t have any energy. And these are all really, truly the least of my worries. If my daughter, my husband and I keep our minds intact, it will be a miracle. I’m really needing to see a light at the end of the tunnel right now.

“Bring Me To Life”
(Evanescence featuring Paul McCoy)

how can you see into my eyes like open doors
leading you down into my core
where I’ve become so numb without a soul my spirit sleeping somewhere cold
until you find it there and lead it back home

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)

bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

now that I know what I’m without
you can’t just leave me
breathe into me and make me real
bring me to life
(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

Bring me to life
(I’ve been living a lie, there’s nothing inside)
Bring me to life
frozen inside without your touch without your love darling only you are the life among the dead
all this time I can’t believe I couldn’t see
kept in the dark but you were there in front of me
I’ve been sleeping a thousand years it seems
got to open my eyes to everything
without a thought without a voice without a soul
don’t let me die here
there must be something more
bring me to life

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become
(Bring me to life)
I’ve been living a lie, there’s nothing inside
(Bring me to life)
