On your mark, get set, go!

The official Mini Marathon training schedule starts today. The weather is excessively warm, so I decided it was time to get off my butt and hit the pavement.

Even though I’ve been not-so-good about exercising during the last three months, I did my required 30 minutes and … drum roll please … was walking faster than 18 minute miles! You might recall from last year that the course requirement is 18 minute miles and a goal I found so very hard to meet! So, today, I did 17:45, which was better than anything I managed in training last year.

Good start.

The U.S. Track and Field web site has this handy little mapping tool that helps me figure out my distance and map out flat walking routes.

I feel like last year a lot of my problem was lack of cardio strength. I felt like I was up against a wall at times, trying so damn hard to go faster and just being stuck. Over the summer, I kept up with working out and would jump on the treadmill occasionally. A couple of times, just for fun, I pumped up the speed to see how fast I could go. Well, I managed to do a 15 minute mile a few times without dying!

So, I’m very hopeful training for me will be easier – enjoyable, even – this year. I wasn’t even trying very hard this morning. Good sign, don’t you think? 😉

I believe you know Rachel Levin. Please see below a comment on her blog. Cancer sucks.

“Who knew that Rachel’s posting on January 11th would be her last? When she wrote “My dearest friends” she was showing the determination that was the hallmark of her battle with breast cancer. She fully intended to an yet another entry to her much-read blog.

Today, Jan. 22nd, Rachel died. She is no longer in pain nor is she suffering. Godspeed Rachel. We will miss you but we will never forget you.
